ATLANTA (AP) -- A former Georgia Attorney General says he launched a state investigation into Republican gubernatorial hopeful John Oxendine in the mid 1990s and referred the case to the U.S. attorney.
But no charges were ever filed against Oxendine, the state's insurance commissioner.
Republican Mike Bowers — who hosted a fundraiser for Oxendine GOP rival Karen Handel — was looking into allegations Oxendine pressured insurance executives seeking rate increases into hiring campaign supporters.
Bowers told The Associated Press on Sunday that he was coming forward because Oxendine "would be a disaster for Georgia if he was governor."
Oxendine fired back in a televised debate Sunday night saying Bowers abused his power.
Bowers claims were first reported in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
