ATLANTA (AP) -- Would-be gubernatorial candidate Ray Boyd has thrown his support behind Republican Jeff Chapman.

In an e-mail sent to supporters on Tuesday, the millionaire businessman from Rutledge said he's donated $6,100 to Chapman's bid for the state's top job. He encouraged supporters to do the same.

A state senator from Brunswick, Chapman is considered a long shot in the seven-person race for governor.

Boyd burst on the political scene earlier this year when he pledged to spend $2 million of his own cash to win the Republican nomination for governor. But his refusal to sign a GOP loyalty oath kept him from qualifying to run on the Republican line. He abandoned plans to run as an independent after concluding he couldn't gather the more than 50,000 needed signatures.
