AUGUSTA, GA. (AP) -- Prosecutors are asking a judge to order a psychiatric hearing for an ex-national guardsman charged with impersonating a U.S. Army soldier at Fort Gordon after he convinced military officials to hand him high-tech equipment.

Anthony Todd Saxon, 34, was arrested on the Army post last week after military police found him with stun grenades, a land mine and a laser targeting sight.

Authorities say he told his wife and family he worked at the base and was to be deployed on a secretive mission to Iraq or Afghanistan.

Saxon's father Hugh said at a court hearing Monday his son needed psychological treatment, and prosecutors said in the court filing it would help determine whether he is suffering from a mental defect.
