There were smiles to go around in Albany Friday after a marine came back to the United States from his first tour of duty in Afghanistan.
Lance Corporal David Van Cura arrived at the Marine Corps logistic base in Albany and was greeted by his fellow soldiers.
“It feels great. It feels great to be back home,” said Van Cura.
“I am very glad that he is back and all full limbs and nothing is missing, so I feel outstanding,” said Staff Sgt. Rolonda Bailey, who was there to greet Van Cura when he came back home.
Van Cura worked in the country helping to repair military vehicles that were damaged in explosions.
“Over in Afghanistan we were pretty much dealing with a bunch of the blown up vehicles and retrograding them back to the states to get repaired and hopefully get them back out there and back in the fight,” said Van Cura
Now he will spend some time in Albany before he gets to go back home in Maine.
A similar scene is expected at the base next week. At least one more marine is coming home after spending time in Afghanistan.
And Staff Sgt. Bailey says it’s a good feeling for the other soldiers to see a comrade come home safely after spending time in Afghanistan.
“I imagine it’s got to be a sentimental feeling, and to see that people actually care and miss you it’s got to be an exciting feeling,” said Bailey.
