ALBANY, GA. -- The Albany Fire Department conducted an educational exercise Wednesday morning, using a control burn to gather information and educate firefighters on how to analyze fire causation.
Arson Investigator Sam Harris was on hand to point out certain characteristics of an arson that investigators should look for.
“It helps us to train our personnel on how to determine which one is a flammable liquid pour pattern and which one is an accidental or a sofa fire,” Harris said.
Mike Tilson from The Albany Code Enforcement mentioned that the dilapidated house used for the control burn was going to be torn down by the city, but using it as a training exercise in this fashion actually saves the city around $1,000 to $2,000 dollars depending on the structure. He also commented that not every abandoned house can be torn down in this fashion. Only structures that don’t pose a risk to surrounding properties can be used for controlled burns.
