The Georgia Board of Education heard from dozens of people Wednesday lined up to support a proposed statewide ban on solitary confinement in schools
(AP) -- ATLANTA (AP) - The Georgia Board of Education heard from dozens of people Wednesday lined up to support a proposed statewide ban on solitary confinement in schools.
The public hearing is the first step toward changing a state rule allowing seclusion as a disciplinary tactic in schools. The proposal also would limit the use of restraint in schools and require schools to notify parents when their children are restrained by educators.
The board is set vote next month on the change.
The crowd at the hearing included parents, educators, attorneys and children's advocates.
If the policy is approved, it would move Georgia off a federal list of nearly 20 states that do not regulate seclusion and restraint in schools. The dangerous practices have led to injuries and death in some cases.
