A new Google earth application gives people an idea of just how much oil has leaked, comparing the size of the oil spill to metropolitan cities.
Today marks day 50 of the oil spill in the gulf coast, and as crude oil continues to pour into the region a new application using Google Earth is giving us a better idea of just how much oil has spilled.
The scenes are still dramatic as oil soaked birds continue to pop up along the gulf coast.
But mixed in that there is a little bit of good news. Coast Guard officials say a new containment cap put on the spewing well captured more than 600-thousand gallons of oil on Monday.
"We were able to recover 14, 842 barrels. This has climbed steadily since the first day," said Admiral Thad Allen.
But it is still unclear just how much oil is escaping the well and full containment is not expected for some time.
"Even if we are successful in containing some or much of this oil, we are not going to get this problem completely solved until we have the relief wells completed and that is going to take a couple more months," President Obama said Monday.
An estimated 39 million gallons of crude oil has already leaked into the gulf since the April twentieth explosion on the deepwater horizon. There is so much oil that it could cover Albany more than three times.

And here in Albany a wild life team is standing by, hoping to get a call from BP to help rescue animals but there phones have been silent.
“Every time we talk to one place they send us to another and every time we go to that place they send us back so they are giving a lot of run around," said Amanda Barber of the Flint RiverQuarium.
Now Barber and a group of others are gearing up for plan b, a garage sale aimed at raising money for a trip to the Gulf Coast.
“I love birds, I love animals,” said Barber. “I can't sit by and watch the images and not do anything. I'm trained to do something so I am going to go down and see if I can help."
The garage sale is scheduled for this Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. at 132 Pine Lakes Cir. In Leesburg.
