(AP) -- ATLANTA (AP) - Atlanta police say one man is dead and another seriously wounded after a shootout in an apartment complex near the federal penitentiary.

Police Maj. Keith Meadows says a quarrel preceded the shooting Monday night, but he says the motive for the shooting is not known.

Police say one of the men had head wounds, and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital where he died. They say the other man was taken to Atlanta Medical Center, where he remained Tuesday morning in stable condition.

The names of the men have not been released.
