Program helps to keep kids on the right track
The Great Champs Summer program kicked off Tuesday.
The summer-long program, hosted by The Dougherty County Sheriff's Office, The Dougherty County Police Department, The Albany Police Department's AmeriCorps Cadet Program and The Phoebe Network of Trust is designed to keep middle and elementary school aged kids away from gang activity. The officers and volunteers participate in fun activities like playing football and dodge ball with the kids to build rapport then provide them with tools to succeed in life. "A kid doesn't care what you know until they know that you care for them," said Dougherty County Sheriff Kevin Sproul.
The program teaches kids about proper nutrition, the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse, and fiscal responsibility.
