A candidate for the Dougherty County Board of Education is speaking out about the new superintendent.

Sherrell Byrd is running for the District 2 seat and says she wants to work with Dr. Joshua Murfree, but also hold him accountable. The board approved Murfree’s contract Wednesday. He will make around $173,000 a year including benefits.

“Right now we just need to make sure that for our kids sake, we support him, we give him the resources that he needs to be able to do his job well, and time will tell what type of superintendent he will be,” Byrd said.

Byrd is running against current School Board Member Milton “Junebug” Griffin. Fellow Democrat Lynda Weaver and Republican Donnie Smith are also running for that seat.
