The Georgia Board of Regents vote to raise the tuition at all public colleges and universities
All schools within the University System of Georgia will see an increase in tuition beginning in the fall. The tuition hike is part of a comprehensive plan to help cut millions of dollars from the state budget.
Albany State University’s Vice President of Fiscal Affairs Larry Wakefield says starting in the fall ASU undergraduate students will have to pay an extra $100 per semester.
According to the Board of Regents the tuition increases are based on the type of school. Here’s the breakdown of the increase per semester.
- Two Year College = $50 (Darton, Bainbridge)
- State College = $100 (Macon State, Middle Georgia)
- State University = $200 (Albany State, Georgia Southwestern)
- State University w/ Special Missions = $300 (Columbus State, Valdosta State)
- Large Research University = $500 (UGA, Georgia Tech)
In addition to the University System of Georgia, the Georgia Technical College System will also see a small increase in tuition. Dr. Anthony Parker of Albany Technical College says their tuition hike is modest. “We will have a five dollar increase per credit hour. It’s still only $45 or so compared to the public and private colleges” says Dr. Parker.
There is one exception, rising juniors and seniors who began college under the old “Four for Four” program will not have to pay the tuition increase. Students who began college a few years ago were able to secure their college tuition costs remain the same all four years of college. The program has been disbanded because of budgetary concerns.
