Moultrie police say one of two people involved in abusing an elderly woman was cashing the victim’s social security checks.

55-year-old Royce Dillard, Jr. is now charged with seven counts of forgery for cashing Social Security checks written to 74-year-old Christine Welch. Police say Dillard and 34-year-old Tasha Chambers lived with Welch and abused her. Police found Welch malnourished to 80 pounds with bedsores infested with maggots and gangrene in both feet. Since then Welch has had both feet amputated and is recovering at a Valdosta nursing home.

Police say each forgery count is for a check cashed since December. The Social Security Administration helped with the investigation. They believe more checks and other people could be involved.
