Prior to a raid by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation over the weekend, Dougherty County police said they have never had a high number of stolen pit bulls reported.
More than 100 dogs were recovered in the raid, and authorities at the Albany Humane Society say their phones have been ringing of the hook. The Humane Society has received almost 50 phone calls since Monday from people who claim their pit bulls were stolen. While photo and ownership ID is required to claim an animal, authorities say none of the pit bulls are being released since they are considered to be evidence in the case. Police say they have to be skeptical of the calls since associates of those caught fighting have been known to come and claim the animals in prior cases.
