Georgia is receiving $122 million dollars to help its lowest performing schools

According to the Georgia Department of Education, Dougherty High School, Monroe High School, Albany High School, Radium Middle School, and Dougherty Middle School are on a list for the lowest performing schools in the nation, which qualifies them for a school improvement grant.

If the schools apply for the grant the Dougherty County School Board would have to take one of four drastic actions to raise student achievement.  The school reform options are firing the entire staff, converting the school into a charter school, replacing the principal, or closing the school.

DCSS Public Information officer R.D. Harter says it’s not difficult to take advantage of money that can help improve schools, but the board has a lot to consider.  “The board will look over test scores, the four options, the amount of money tied to the grant for improvement, and see what course they’d like to take” says Harter.

Dougherty County Schools have made improvements over time including raising the graduation rate from 50% in 2001 to 75% in 2009.

The school board is expected to discuss the schools and potential grand money at the next school board meeting.
