Michael Fowler shares his experiences with FOX 31 News
Michael Fowler has helped with recovery efforts for Hurricane Katrina, the Indonesian Tsunami, and the Albany flood of 1994.
Fowler helped recover, identify, embalm, and ship bodies back to families for three weeks.
His team used finger prints, dental records, and even dna to identify people. One of the hurdles the team faced was identifying Haitians because they had no medical or dental records to compare their data. “Many of them had never had dental work in their life so there were no records to verify identities. It was frustrating and sad to send them to mass graves” says Fowler.
The trip to Haiti was personal to Fowler because his Albany church has a second location in Haiti. The church was destroyed and the pastor was injured.
Fowler says the conditions people in Haiti are still living in is shocking and sad.
After identifying, embalming, and shipping nearly 100 people back to their families Fowler says he’s happy to have had the opportunity to contribute to the devastating event.
