Accident near Chehaw kills one

A fatal car accident near the entrance of Chehaw shut down Philema road traffic for 45 minutes Thursday afternoon.

Police say 21-year-old Kate Cox was driving a white SUV when she hit 80-year-old Henry W. Martin.

Martin was outside of his pickup truck at the time of the accident and police say White swerved in an attempt to avoid him, however the accident was unavoidable.

Dougherty County Police Chief Don Cheek says the accident is an unfortunate event.  “It appeared that he was walking around the back of the pickup truck, stopped in the inbound lane of traffic when the white vehivle came up and apparently didn’t see him, and struck both the back of the truck and the victim” says Cheek.

Police aren’t sure why Martin was outside of his vehicle, but they think it was because of car troubles.  Martin’s truck was on and the emergency brake was also on.

No charges will be filed against Cox.
