At Thursday's Gang Task Force meeting, gang unit officers told the crowd they have identified 42 gangs in Albany
The Gang Task Force is back in action, holding its first meeting of the year this afternoon.
Coming off 435 arrests and 78 gang participation charges in 2009, newly appointed Gang Unit Commander Captain Benita Childs says this year’s approach will be proactive. There are now 42 known gangs in Albany. Childs says they’re working to identify members and making visits to their homes.
“You have to keep your fingers on the pulse so to speak, and just make sure that through surveillance and intel that you have a running knowledge of what’s going on in the city,” said Childs.
In 2009, gang unit officers made face-to-face contact with 2,000 people.
