A new Mardi Gras exhibit opened at the Albany Arts Council as organizers are getting ready for the big weekend March 6

Albany’s Mardi Gras weekend is less than a month away, and organizers are working hard to make the event bigger than last year.

Pictures from Mardi Gras 2009 are on display at the Albany Arts Council for a new exhibit that will run through this year’s Mardi Gras celebration. Organizer Phil Cannon says they expect forty to 50,000 people to attend the entire weekend which will kick off with the Snickers Marathon on Saturday, March 6th.   The bike race will follow and a street festival on Broad Avenue will go from noon to midnight. Cannon says they’re adding a music stage at the amphitheater for Saturday and they’re adding a Sunday event.

“The event on Sunday which is called “Praise in the Park” at the amphitheater from noon to six will be Gospel music,” Cannon said. “We are opening the stage up to churches to children’s choirs, puppet shows, and gospel music of any kind.”

The Convention and Visitors Bureau is looking for volunteers for all Mardi Gras events. You can sign up at the CVB on Front Street.
