Dougherty County Board of Education Member Michael Windom wants a special called meeting to 'reconsider' choosing Dr. Joshua Murfree as a superintendent finalist
A Dougherty County Board of Education member is asking the board to reconsider their choice for superintendent.
Michael Windom sent an e-mail to board members Saturday asking they hold a special called meeting to further discuss the selection process. The board voted five to two Wednesday to name Albany State University’s Dr. Joshua Murfree a finalist for the position. The board has to wait 14 days to officially appoint Murfree.
According to the Georgia Secretary of State’s website Board Member Anita Williams-Brown and Murfree are business partners for a non-profit organization. Williams-Brown did not disclose that to the board during the selection process.
Even though Windom voted for Murfree, along with Williams-Brown, Velvet Riggins, Milton “Junebug” Griffin, and James Bush, he told FOX 31 News on Thursday that Murfree was not his top choice. Board Chair David Maschke and Emily Jean McAfee voted against naming Murfree a finalist.
Here is the full-text of Windom's e-mail:
Dear Mr. Maschke,
I wanted you to know that I understand the concerns about the superintendent selection process expressed from all corners of our community. The individuals in our community have been very expressive of their concern vividly and consistently.
I am requesting that a special call meeting be held this week to reconsider our options. Some times in our public service journeys, we sometimes make mistakes. We must be accountable for them.
I will be asking to reconsider our selection process of the next Superintendent. I will be asking specifically that our colleagues reconsider their choice at the special call meeting this coming week.
Please keep me in prayer as this process continues to progress.
Michael Windom
