Mary Young Cummings was the first African American female City commissioner in Albany
Wednesday, folks gathered at Mt. Zion Baptist Church to say goodbye to Mary Young Cummings.
Cummings was the first African American woman to be City commissioner and the first African American woman to practice law in Albany. She later went on to serve in the Georgia General Assembly. She was active during the Civil Rights movement and participated in the March on Washington in 1963. Her son, Demetrius Young, says no matter how busy she got, she was always a mother first.
Those at the memorial service say she will be best known for her commitment to serving others.
