Hundreds packed Mount Zion Baptist Church in Albany for H.E.A.R.T.’s 30th annual Martin Luther King Day celebration
Southwest Georgia is remembering Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Hundreds packed Mount Zion Baptist Church in Albany for H.E.A.R.T.’s 30th annual King Day celebration. This year to honor King, Civil Rights activist John Perdew performed the play “Education of a Harvard Guy.” In it Perdew relives his time in southwest Georgia. He was arrested twice, beat up, and helped overturn an outdated law that called for the death penalty.
Mary Thomas helped start H.E.A.R.T. which has worked to bring people of all races together for the past 30 years. She says Perdew’s performance brought her back to the time of Dr. King.
“I was jailed myself, and just to see this 30 years ago, I had no idea that it was going to be this big,” Thomas said. “It just brought tears to my eyes.”
H.E.A.R.T.’s newest mission is donating shoes to children in need. Thomas says they will continue working to bring people together.
