Oglethorpe University has been on "warning" status for the last two years
(AP) -- Oglethorpe University is keeping its accreditation after nearly losing its status with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools over financial problems.
The 1,000-student college has been on "warning" status for the last two years because of a mounting budget deficit. The college ended the 2009 fiscal year with a $1.5 million surplus and a 5 percent larger enrollment than three years ago.
The college sits in northeast Atlanta and is home to the Georgia Shakespeare theater company.
Its new accreditation status is good for a decade. SACS accredits degree-granting institutions in 11 Southern states and Latin America.
