Proposals to strengthen Georgia's ethics laws
(AP) -- Georgia voters should get ready to hear a lot about ethics - or the lack of them - at the state Capitol.
Secretary of State Karen Handel, a Republican candidate for governor, and state Rep. Rob Teilhet, a Democrat running for attorney general, both unveiled proposals on Monday to strengthen Georgia's ethics laws.
The plans come just days after House Speaker Glenn Richardson resigned amid allegations of an affair with a lobbyist. The relationship had been the target of a 2007 ethics complaint by Georgia Democrats that was dismissed by a legislative ethics panel.
Both Handel and Teilhet would make the state Ethics Commission responsible for overseeing complaints against legislators.
Currently, lawmakers police themselves in Georgia.
