(AP) -- A newly released 911 tape reveals Georgia House Speaker Glenn Richardson took sleeping pills in a failed attempt to kill himself and then called his mother to tell her he loved her. It was his mother who called 911 on the evening of Nov. 8.
A recording of the 911 call was released by the Paulding County Sheriff's Department on Monday. On the call, Richardson's mother tells the dispatcher her son called and told her "it was too late to do anything."
A police report says sheriff's deputies found Richardson sitting on the edge of his bathtub with a gun nearby. Authorities said he was semiconscious and was taken to the hospital.
In a statement Friday, Richardson revealed the suicide attempt and said he has struggled with depression since his divorce.
