Police believe more than one source is circulating bogus bills

(AP) -- Athens-Clarke County police say they're getting an unusual number of reports about counterfeit money being passed in the area.

Police say one man used $120 in fake $20 bills to pay for a mechanical Halloween figure at a roadside stand.

Officers say the quality of the bills the vendor took for the figure was better than much of the counterfeit money that has been showing up in Athens for more than a month.

Police believe more than one source is circulating bogus bills.

Detective Beverly Russell, a financial crimes investigator with the department, says the bad forgeries often are made with bond paper and an ink-jet color printer. She says the hues are off, the images are fuzzy, and the colors tend to run.
