Marion County senior Erick Gutierrez was pronounced dead at Phoebe-Sumter Hospital after collapsing at football practice just after 5 p.m. Tuesday.

"It's an unfortunate situation where one of our football players collapsed on the field and was not able to be revived," said high school principal Glenn Tidwell.  "He was transported to Phoebe-Sumter and at some point died."

Tidwell says the coaches performed CPR and called paramedics, but they were unable to revive Gutierrez.  Tidwell says the cause of death will be determined by an autopsy.

Gutierrez played on the varsity team since he was a freshman.
