Police chief shares on his decision to use the weapon

The death of an Albany man who died after being tased by police in Florida last Friday has some people wondering if “less than lethal” weapons like Taser guns are justifiable, although it is still unknown if 38-year-old Rickey Massey’s death is directly connected to him being tased by police.

Dougherty County Police Chief Don Cheek said it took him years to decide if Taser guns would be used in his department.  While the weapons for each of his officers are in house, they won’t be used until the departmental policy and officer training are completed.  Cheek says Taser deaths are uncommon, and the weapons are far less deadly than guns.
