(AP) -- Gov. Sonny Perdue is urging citizens and businesses to find ways to serve their communities during Hands On Georgia Week, which runs through Saturday.

The governor's statement cited the Volunteering in America Report by the Corporation for National and Community Service. It says Georgians volunteered for nearly 213.6 million hours of service from 2006 to 2008, worth an estimated $4.3 billion.

Hands On Georgia acts as a central organizing body for all of Georgia's 159 counties to mobilize citizens to address community needs.

It has 15 affiliates that include Athens, Atlanta, Brunswick, Columbus, Covington, Dalton, Dooly County, Forsyth County, Harlem, Macon, Milledgeville, Savannah, Statesboro, Wayne County and Thomas County.
