(AP) -- Former President Jimmy Carter and former first lady Rosalynn Carter are receiving a peace award given by James Madison University this week.

The university says the Carters are scheduled to accept the Mahatma Gandhi Global Nonviolence Award in person at the Monday event.

The award given by the school's Mahatma Gandhi Center for Global Nonviolence recognizes the couple's humanitarian efforts worldwide. South African anti-apartheid activist Desmond Tutu was the inaugural winner of the award last year.

Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his efforts to promote peace after he left the presidency in 1981.

The couple founded the nonprofit Carter Center, a worldwide humanitarian group, in 1982.
