Palmyra Medical Center is going to new heights to get patients to and from the hospital.

Palmyra will now be providing helicopter medical services to trauma patients. In addition to getting patients to the hospital in a more timely fashion, the Air-Evac Lifeteam will also be able to take patients that need further care to places like the burn center in Augusta. Nurses and paramedics on board will be able stabilize their victims, take their vitals and even do surgical procedures.

“We do advanced airways procedures and one of the things we were trained in at the flight academy is surgical crisis, when we actually go in and cut a hole in your throat and put a tube in if that's the only way that you can protect the airways,” Said Flight nurse, Julie Tucker.

Palmyra stopped offering helicopter services in 2001, with the building of a new medical office on the old launch pad site. Since then, patients have been flown directly into the airport and transported by ambulance from there to the hospital.
