(AP) -- The University of Georgia football team plans to honor a Georgia-based National Guard unit currently stationed in Afghanistan.

During their home game against South Carolina on Saturday, the Bulldogs will wear a patch on their helmets that replicates the 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team's shoulder sleeve insignia.  The combat team is made up of about 3,000 Georgians and is headquartered in Macon. It is currently training and mentoring Afghan army and police officers.

UGA head coach Mark Richt said he jumped at the chance when he heard that soldiers in the 48th come from all over the state.
