Commissioners talk about the space needed for the new fire station

The Lee County Commission says the Smithville Chokee Fire Station is underway.

At the work session Tuesday night, commissioners discussed the consideration to accept the land for the project, pending approval of the deed by the county attorney.  Meanwhile, commissioners heard from fire officials and were told the substation on New York Road responded to a minimum amount of calls.  The lease for the land that the building is on has expired and Dennis Roland, commissioner for the Smithville Chokee area says he doesn't have any concerns about closing that station.  Fire Chief James Howell says should the board close the substation then a place to store a relief truck would need to be found.

The Board of Elections says it could be a hindrance since the building served as a voting precinct.
