(AP) -- U.S. Attorney Edmund A. Booth Jr. of the Southern District of Georgia says he will resign Sept. 3 after more than two years as the district's top federal prosecutor.
Booth, an Athens native, was appointed to the job by President George W. Bush in December 2007 after serving 10 months as interim U.S. attorney. His resignation next month makes way for President Barack Obama to appoint a new chief prosecutor.
Booth has worked in the U.S. Attorney's Office for his entire 38-year legal career. As U.S. attorney, Booth helped lead a crackdown on seaport smuggling that led to prosecution of five drug cases and seizure of more than $15 million in counterfeit goods. A crackdown on gun violence led to the conviction of 98 defendants in Augusta and Statesboro.
