Shoppers picking up supplies and clothes
Shoppers were out on the first day of the tax free weekend with one thing on their minds - to save money.
“Well, one we had to go school shopping and we had to find her some new clothes and some new shoes,” said Tax Free Shopper Taylor Jones.
“ Back to the economy more people are getting out, they're trying to save money now and spend less and get more for what they're spending,” said Michael Lewis who was shopping at the mall.
The tax exemptions apply to clothing under $100 dollars, computers and computer equipment under $1500 dollars, and school supplies under $20 dollars. Local retailers like Wal-Mart say they definitely expect to see more shoppers this year.
“We believe we're going to have more volume than we did last year. We've lowered some of our prices on some key items. Everybody's coming after notebook paper, school boxes, lunch boxes a lot of clothing is selling,” said Co-Manager Chris Guerrero.
Even teachers at Sherwood Acres Elementary School who were just asked to furlough three work days due to Georgia's budget crisis say they still support the tax free deals.
“Well, I think it's great because a lot of parents are depending on this weekend to get clothes, school supplies - so I think it's necessary,” said Kindergarten Teacher Veronica Reese.
And they may even use the tax breaks to cash in themselves.
“Getting excited for the beginning of the year. We can certainly use the tax free holiday to gather supplies that we purchase on our own anyways so that every little bit helps,” said Counselor Margaret Hatcher.
