Construction could begin the latter half of this year
The lease agreement between Americus and Sumter County Hospital Authority and the Phoebe Putney Health System has been approved.
The Phoebe Sumter Medical Center will replace Sumter Regional Hospital that was destroyed in the March first tornadoes in 2007. The new facility will be built on 40 acres behind "Granny's Kitchen" at the intersection of Highways 19 and 280 in Americus. Phoebe Putney President and CEO, Joel Wernick, says the 76-bed replacement facility should be finished by 2011. David Smith, with KLMK Group, says the design was heavily influenced by a term called "new urbanism" with the buildings centered around a town square.
Officials with Phoebe Putney Hospital say it's too early to say whether former employees with Sumter Regional will have a place at the new facility, which is expected to begin construction in the latter half of 2009.
