(AP) -- Georgia Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle is set to undergo surgery aimed at correcting a degenerative spine and neck condition.

The surgery will take place today at Emory University Hospital.  Cagle withdrew from the governor's race on April 15 saying he
needed time to recover from the painful back and neck problem.  He'd been considered a front runner to win the GOP nomination for governor next year.  Instead, the 43-year-old from Gainesville said he'll seek re-election as lieutenant governor.

In a statement, Cagle said he and his family appreciate the thoughts and prayers they've received from residents around the
state.
