Where will stimulus dollars go in Albany-Dougherty County?
City and County leaders met today at First Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church to discuss how the economic stimulus package will affect southwest Georgia.
Currently Albany has received over $17 million. Here's how the money will be allocated: $3 Million for community development, $2 million towards the Albany Housing Authority, $400,000 to the Albany Police Department, $700,000 for greening, $2 million for transit, and $9 Million towards the Dougherty County School System. County Commissioner Gloria Gaines expects new jobs to stem from the new money.
“Well of course, and that is the intent. When you have a major project like the widening of Gillionville Road, you can expect to have the people there working. That’s’ $10 million and much of that will be in labor. They have money there for weatherization of low income homes, for instance, that’s going to create new jobs as well,” said Gaines.
