Officials warn of the many health risks associated with standing water
This week’s flooding damaged numerous homes in Southwest Georgia. Health Director/Registered Nurse Dan Staib offers his thoughts on the standing water left behind.
“You should stay out of standing water. Don’t go playing in standing water. Keep the kids out of standing waters. Death can occur from a number of things be it electrocution from exposed wiring that’s in the water. It’s a breeding ground for infectious diseases, particularly West Nile Virus, Easter Equine, that kind of thing. But beyond that there are diarrhea type illnesses that can be associated there. There are injuries that might be associated with going through standing water,” said Staib.
WGL’s Water Director Gary Morefield continues to work hard so flooding waters don’t pollute the city’s drinking water.
“The water is safe. We have certified operators in the field daily and certified plant operators monitoring our system 24-7. We got deep wells that carry of the majority of the system, plus we have the water plant on line,” said Morefield.
