The Flint River is rising, and a tremendous amount of ground water is overloading Albany's storm and sanitary drainage systems
The City of Albany and southwest Georgia have had significant rain over the last week.
As a result, both the Flint River is rising, and a tremendous amount of ground water is overloading Albany's storm and sanitary drainage systems. The river is expected to reach the first crest early Saturday, with the second crest to follow Tuesday. City staff is preparing for these events, though no additional river flooding problems are anticipated at this time.
The immediate problem is a surcharged (overloaded) sanitary sewer system serving northwest Albany. City officials are requesting for citizens and businesses in that part of Albany, and on the sanitary sewer system to make an effort to use the least amount of water they can for the next 48 hours thru 3:45 p.m., Sunday, April 5. The system is at capacity and extra mobile pumps are in place, yet staff is still challenged to keep up. Good examples of non-essential water uses would be using dishwashers and washing machines.
City officials are requesting this effective immediately, as additional rain for Sunday can trigger a surcharge recurrence if the system cannot be adequately drained now.
