If your area is being evacuated, you’ll hear it from your county’s emergency management director
Local emergency management agencies are ready to set up shelters throughout southwest Georgia.
If your area is being evacuated, you’ll hear it from your county’s emergency management director. At that time you’ll find out which shelter is opening. Public Health Emergency Preparedness Director Julie Miller says usually it’s a school or church that’s out of harms way. Emergency preparedness officials say to check on family and friends who might be stranded and stay with friends or family If you’re afraid to get stuck in high waters. Many times during severe weather people go to emergency rooms for shelter, but ER officials say stay away. “They’re already dealing with injuries and emergency situations,” Palmyra Hospital Emergency Management Director Chuck Mitchell says. “The emergency rooms are not set up for sheltering or anything like that so try to keep those clear.”
A shelter was open in Albany today and will be available tonight. The location is the Beattie Road Church of Christ, 1731 Beattie Road. It is available to those in low lying areas likely to flood, as well as mobile home dwellers that might be susceptible to predicted high winds. Other shelter locations will be opened if necessary.
Call your county’s emergency management agency for the latest information about evacuations.
