Boil water orders are in effect for private wells in several southwest Georgia counties.

The order applies to private wells only-not municipal water systems-for Colquitt, Decatur, Miller, Seminole, Tift and Turner counties. You should boil water for two minutes before using it for consumption. Albany Fire Chief James Carswell says you need to get your well tested for contamination before drinking well water, saying, "The biggest danger is bacteria may grow in the well. Unless it's treated, it'll continue to grow and so if you were affected at all by [the storm], be sure before you drink out of that well that you have it tested at one of the laboratories.

Contact your local health department for contamination testing.
