Dougherty County Commissioners say it may not be worth the $25,000 price tag for Code Red
Dougherty County Commissioners are deciding if they will renew the "Code Red" services in light of the economic crisis.
Some commissioners feel not enough people have signed up for the services to make it worth the $25,000 asking price. EMA Deputy Director Jim Vaught says he is talking with Code Red officials to see if they can get a system that has all listed phone numbers included so people don't have to sign up for it--they'll already be on the list to get phone messages automatically in the case of a natural disaster. Vaught says they want to carry only the automated system as opposed to the manual, which requires an operator to manually type a message and send it to each phone number. Vaught says they would keep the manual system as a pay-as-you-go service in the case of an Amber Alert.
Fire officials will meet again with the Dougherty County Commission the first week in March.
