Dougherty County Police Chief Don Cheek got word last week that an Albany-Dougherty Drug Unit officer was suspected of attempting to rape a 26-year-old woman.

According to Albany police records, officers responded to the Superior Creek Lodge February 4, 2009 in response to an attempted rape.  Chief Cheek immediately suspended 41-year-old Oscar David Gilliam with pay after hearing he was the suspect.  Wednesday afternoon, Gilliam turned himself in to Dougherty County Sheriff's deputies, but was released on bond an hour and a half later.  Bond was set at $15,000.

Gilliam was charged with violation of oath of office, false imprisonment and sexual battery.  Gilliam is suspended with pay for the time being.
