FBI joins invertigation into salmonella probe in Blakely, Georgia
(AP) -- The FBI is assisting the federal investigation into the salmonella outbreak that has sickened hundreds and may have caused as many as eight deaths.
Special Agent Gregory Jones says the FBI is "fully involved" in helping the Food and Drug Administration's inquiry into the Peanut Corp. of America's Blakely, Georgia, plant. Federal officials say the company knowingly shipped salmonella-laced products from the Georgia plant even after tests confirmed the contamination. The outbreak has led to one of the nation's biggest food recalls and spurred a spate of lawsuits from victims claiming millions of
dollars in damages.
Politicians are calling for criminal charges, and the government is working on an investigation.
