Get set for higher power bills, WG&L approves rate hike

Water Gas and Light approved a rate hike on Thursday that could be seen in your next electricity bill.

But WG&L says its 29,000 gas customers could see a reduction in their bill because the price of the natural gas is so low.  However, the ‘Purchase Power Adjustment’ factor put in place by WG&L years ago will affect electricity rates.  Assistant General Manager Lori Farkas says while a rate hike would be more permanent, the PPA factor can be reduced when times get better.

Farkas also says their 'Hope' program was able to help 133 families pay their utility bills in 2008, but because of inadequate funding they had to turn away 289 people.
