Gun sales continue to rise in southwest Georgia, females lead buyers

Gus sales have been on the upswing in Southwest Georgia since well before Christmas, but you may be surprised to find out who is packing the heat in 2009.

Local pawn shop operators say new customers; those not familiar with firearms, have been on the rise, especially with females.  Shop owners say the number one reason for gun sales is self-protection, and that smaller firearms are the item of choice.

Self-defense instructors also say their classes have been female-driven.  They recommend everyday items for self-defense; like keys, bags, or big purses.
