NAACP wants apology from Georgia for slavery
(AP) -- Georgia's chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People plans to push again for the state
Legislature to issue an apology for slavery.
The group's president, Edward DuBose, said Thursday he's sent a letter to Gov. Sonny Perdue asking him to "do the right thing." Six other states already have passed resolutions apologizing for slavery. Georgia launched an effort to do so in 2007, but the effort floundered after a prominent Republican supporter backed out.
DuBose says he thinks the effort had a good chance of passing this year, as the NAACP marks its 100th anniversary and Barack Obama is inaugurated as the nation's first black President.
