More than half a million Americans lost their jobs in December

The U.S. unemployment numbers are in for December and the news is far from being good.

The U.S. Labor Department Friday that 524,000 Americans lost their jobs in the final month of the 2008.  For 2008 as a whole, about 2.6 million jobs were lost and 1.9 million of those occurred in the last four months.  The U.S. unemployment rate hit 7.2 percent for December - that’s up from 6.8 percent in the previous month and the highest rate since January 1993.

Locally, economists say the economic picture for southwest Georgia does not look very promising for 2009.
