Albany State University students held a rally to encourage their peers to get tested for HIV Monday.

It’s part of World AIDS Day.  District Public Health Director Dr. Jacqueline Grant says to protect yourself from HIV you need to practice abstinence, be faithful if you’re in a committed relationship and practice safe sex.  A new study predicts AIDS could be eliminated in 10 years if people in highly infected areas get tested and treated regularly.  Grant says surveillance tactics like those have worked with other diseases in the past.

The number of HIV cases in the U.S. is 40% higher than the Centers for Disease Control predicted.
