It costs $1.8 million dollar per year to provide health care to Dougherty County inmates
It costs Dougherty County taxpayers $1.8 million dollars to pay for the health care of Dougherty County jail inmates.
The jail is required by law to provide medical treatment for the jail’s 900 inmates while they are in custody. The jail’s public affairs officer, Capt. Keith Kiger explains that “after they are here for fourteen days they get a thorough screening and asked general health questions.” Of the $1.8 million budget, $300,000-$400,000 is spent on prescription medication.
Capt. Kiger’s staff is also responsible for transporting inmates to area hospitals for doctor and dentist appointments, dialysis treatment and outpatient surgery.
